As a part of our planning process we engaged 246 youth aged 15 to 24 resident in Flaxmere, Whakatu and Waimārama between February 2015 and June 2015. We completed 155 assessments and found that 64% had health needs; 15% needed support for employment, education or training; 12% had mental health and addiction issues, 6% safety and 3% social support.
Most were connected to a service except for those needing support in employment, education and training. Of the 54 Māori youth aged 15 – 17 needing this support, only eight accepted this service. This corresponds with the high rates of Māori youth who are disengaged from formal education and employment in Heretaunga. According to the Census 2013, 288 Māori youth aged 15 – 19 in Flaxmere, Whakatu and Waimārama are not in employment, education or training.
